We received two different reports about the fire on River St. in Waterloo Wednesday night. They appeared to be at two different times in two different places and came from two different sources. We now understand that the reports were of the same fire. We wanted to clear up some discrepancies between the two reports we published.
The time differences in the two reports were due to the fact that the call originally came in at about 8:50, but Red Cross was not called to the scene until about midnight.
We have determined that the correct address was 30 East River St., not West as indicated in the Red Cross release. There were three people in the home as the Red Cross reported, not two as the Waterloo Police release report indicated.
The police report indicated the home received moderate damage, while the Red Cross said it was a total loss. This is because originally the damage was thought to be moderate, but after further inspection the fire chief reported that since the fire started in the basement, the structural damage was too great to be repaired and the home was determined to be a total loss.
We regret any confusion our published reports may have caused and thank the Red Cross and Waterloo PD for helping sort out what actually happened.
