Nate Shinagawa came out the victor in yesterday’s primary and will face off against Tom Long for the 23rd District Congressional seat. Shinagawa did not carry Seneca County.
Democrat Nate Shinagawa of Ithaca will face incumbent Republican Tom Reed and Senate Republican Candidate Wendy Long will face Kirstin Gillibrand following yesterday’s primary election.
Here are the results posted by the Seneca County Board of Elections for yesterday’s primary. Although Leslie Banks Burke captured 61% of the vote in the Democratic primary for the new 23rd Congressional District, Nate Shinagawa of Ithaca won the primary handily with 55% against Burke’s 37%. Shinagawa will run against Republican incumbent Congressman Tom Reed in November.
The 79% tally for Senate Candidate Wendy Long reflected her surprisingly large victory over Robert Turner, although statewide the margin was not nearly as impressive. Long still won more than a majority of the ballots cast compared to 36 percent for Turner and 13 for George Maragos. Long will be up against incumbent Democrat Kirstin Gillibrand.
Turnout for the primary was extremely low. Many Democrats did not even know there was a primary since the Congressional District has been redrawn several times before being finalized by a Court decision this Spring. All of Seneca County is now in the new 23rd NY Congressional District and as a result only 294 total votes were cast in the County. 408 total votes were cast in the Republican Senate primary in Seneca County.
