Local Food Workshop Offered Sept. 8th

Do you enjoy eating locally sourced foods? Consider yourself a “local foodie” or “locavore”? Enjoy outdoor recreation, such as hunting and fishing? Want to have high quality meat in the freezer? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should attend a Cornell Cooperative Extension sponsored workshop on September 8^th.

Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension (SCCCE), along with researchers from Cornell University’s Department of Natural Resources and Nutrition are sponsoring a workshop focused on local foods, wild game and fish, and food decision making on Saturday, September 8^th from 3 pm to 6:30 pm at the Fayette Fire Hall, 4200 Route 414, Fayette, NY 13065.

Local food-centered appetizers, drinks, and dinner will be provided in this interactive workshop! Your participation in this event will help researchers better understand family food decision making and local food choices, leading to future educational opportunities from Cornell Cooperative Extension. Local chefs from the Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty will be preparing delicious foods for this event.

Eating locally sourced foods is a growing trend and the Finger Lakes area has many food options from farmer’s markets, farm stores, wineries, roadside stands, and artisanal cheese makers. The Finger Lakes also has abundant wild game and fish which are pursued by sportsmen and women. Researchers from Cornell have recognized a lack of information connecting wild game and fish and the local food system.

“Venison is a naturally lean meat and fish truly is brain food; both are locally available. We want to learn more information on how consumption of wild meats can sustainably fit into a healthy diet for individuals and families, along with local wildlife management”, says Moira Tidball, Nutrition Resource Educator for Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension who co-created the Wild Harvest Table blog,
