An assault weapon is classified as having a selector switch for rate of fire. Safe, Semi, Burst, Automatic. These types of weapons are already illegal to own by civilians unless they have a special permit or collectors license. Limiting the amount of ammo for magazines is a pointless argument. When I was in the Army, we carried up to twenty / 20 round magazines for our M16′s. A criminal doesn’t care about magazine size or type of weapon. These laws will just make it more difficult and expensive for legitimate gun owners. Another way for the state to gouge more money out of the people.
While I agree that it may be too restrictive to limit magazines to 7 rounds, especially since the smallest size on the market is a 10-round magazine, as I understand it. I see no reason for anyone to have these 50-round or higher magazines. Some modification to the present law would be acceptable but we must limit the size of lawful magazines.
