Gerald “Mickey” Schaertl, 80 of Gravel Road, Seneca Falls, died Thursday (August 2, 2012) at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Family and friends may attend Mickey’s funeral service on Monday (August6) at 11 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 23 Cayuga St., Seneca Falls, with Reverend Leah Ntuala, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Springbrook Cemetery, Seneca Falls. There will be no prior calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mickey’s memory to Lifetime Care (Hospice), 1120 S. Main St., Newark, N.Y. 14513 or Alzheimer’s Association, 435 East Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14620.

Mickey was born in Macedon, New York on February 15, 1932, son of George and Iva Schaertl. His family moved to Seneca Falls in 1933. Mickey retired as a 4th generation self employed Mason Contractor. He was well known for his historical restoration work in Seneca Falls, Geneva and surrounding areas. He built his own home as well as many other beautiful homes and fireplaces in the Finger Lakes area. He was a former Town Assessor, Former Commodore of the Red Jacket Yacht Club where he raced in sailing regattas. He was a former Director of the Seneca Falls Hospital and Historical Society. He was a Charter Member of the Seneca Falls Jay Cees and Life member of the Seneca Falls Elks Club where he was voted Elk of the Year and also a member of the SMS.
Mickey is survived by one son, Michael (Janet) of Mapleton, Utah and two daughters, Christine (Frank) Sweet of Seneca Falls N.Y. and Linda (Joseph) Castro of Baldwinsville, N.Y. seven grandchildren, Brooke (Todd) Wilson, Michelle (Chad) Johnson, Mickey Schaertl, and Scott Schaertl, Aaron Sweet, Michelle (Mark) Polky and Craig Middleton. Also three great granddaughters, Madison and Makenna Polky and Ali Wilson and one great grandson, William Polky. Also 2 brothers George (Sally) Schaertl of Shortsville NY and Ronald (Bette) Schaertl of Johnson City Texas as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and his cat “Sweetie Guy”. Mickey took such joy in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mickey was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Katie and his son-in-law William Middleton.
