Waterloo - Howard C. Bateman, 88, of 436 W. Main St., died Monday (December 5, 2011) at Geneva General Hospital.
Friends may call Wednesday (Dec. 7) 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m., at Coe-Genung Funeral Home in Waterloo. The service will be 10:00am Thursday (Dec. 8), at the funeral home. Rev. Thomas Easttey, pastor of Waterloo United Methodist Church, will officiate. The committal service will be 2 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 8) in Maple Hill Cemetery in Corfu.
Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of one’s choice.
Howard was born June 3, 1923, in Byron, the son of Theodore and Florence Beuthel Bateman. He was a 1941 graduate of Elba Central School District in Elba. He graduated from Cornell University, College of Agriculture in 1949 with a B.S. degree in education. He worked as a Cornell Cooperative Extension agent for 45 years in Cayuga and Seneca Counties, until his retirement in ’88.
He was a member of Waterloo United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club and was a member of NY County Agriculture Agents Association. He taught 4-H dog obedience classes for 20 years in Seneca County. He was also a life member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
He is survived by one daughter; Ruth (John) Hakes of Colona, Ill., one son; Howard C. (Anna Marie) Bateman, Jr. of Sussex, NJ, six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister; Norma Birkland of West Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mabel Bateman in February 2010; his three sisters, Irene Meinke, Doris Bateman, and Mabel Wack; and one brother, Burton Bateman.
