Waterloo - John Martin Pontius, Sr., 87, 30 Fayette St., died Monday (January 30, 2012) at Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic.

There will be no calling hours.  The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday (Feb. 3) at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Waterloo.  The Rev. David Mihalyi, rector, will officiate. Spring burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Waterloo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 101 E. William St., Waterloo, 13165 or The Beverly Animal Shelter, 50 E. River St., Waterloo, 13165.

John was born Feb. 5, 1924 in Waterloo, the son of  Martin L. and Lulu M. Mull Pontius. He was a 1942 graduate of Waterloo High School. He was a W.W. II Army veteran having served from 1943 to 1945.  He earned the American Service, Good Conduct, European African Middle Eastern Service, and the W. W. II Victory Medals. In 1950 he graduated from Syracuse University with a B.S. degree in business. He was an accountant with A. P. Delyden Co. in Wolcott from 1950-1952.  For 30 years, from 1952-1982,  he was employed with Seneca County as a Director of Probation. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church having served as vestryman and treasurer.  He was also a member of Waterloo Memorial Post 6433, V.F.W., and Seneca Lodge 113; F. & A. M.  He served as a member of the Waterloo Central School Board of Education, the Fayette Planning Board, and Clifton Springs Hospital Board of Directors.

He is survived by wife of 31 years June Pontius;  two sons, John M. (Andrea) Pontius, Jr. of Oneonta and Peter Y. (Ann) Pontius of Waterloo; one daughter,  Nancy Pontius of Syracuse; one step-son, John McFall of Port St. Lucie, FL;  one step-daughter, Christine Bergman of Penn Yan; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife,  Elizabeth Pontius in 1978; one daughter, Joan Albin in 2010; two brothers Robert and Paul Pontius; and one sister, Ethel Lazier.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Coe-Genung Funeral Home in Waterloo.
