WILLARD - Rick Hurley, age 60, died on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a valiant fight against cancer.
Rick was born on September 15, 1955 in Ithaca, and grew up in Romulus, graduating from Romulus High School in 1975. He proudly served his country in the US Army from 1980 to 1983, and eventually returned to Willard. He owned RLH Enterprises, his contracting business that was primarily hotel remodeling and residential construction projects.
He was a proud member of the American Legion Post #463 in Ovid, where he also worked as the bar steward. Under his management the post flourished and several new ideas were adopted. His bright personality, friendly smile and strong pats on the back were a perfect fit for The Legion. Rick was also a member of the Sons Auxiliary at VFW Post #6200 in Ovid, and there he volunteered his time and talents, again, making great contributions to the post. Rick’s life was rich with family, lifelong friends and a community that he loved. His approach to life was that of a big party, looking for the next good time to be had with family and friends. Rick was undoubtedly the biggest fan of both Elvis and the Green Bay Packers!
Rick is survived by his wife and partner, Olimpia; and by his children, Priscilla Hurley of Tennessee, Sabrina Hurley of Pennsylvania, Richard “Ricky” Hurley of Willard; a granddaughter, Summer Hurley; his siblings, Gary (Cindy) Hurley of Ovid, Michael Hurley, Vicki (Ed) Rounds, Tim (Jacqueline) Hurley, and Jacqueline (Thomas) Henhawk, all of the Rochester area; he also played a large role in the lives of Ian and Selena Belanger, while married to their mother, Shelly; and by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Coleman Phillips.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 South Main Street in Ovid. A Memorial Service will then be held at the funeral home at 2:00pm on Monday, April 18, 2016, officiated by Pastor Steven Beals of the West Fayette Presbyterian Church. Prayers of committal with military honors will be held at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
